Limitless possibilities in the port of Rotterdam

The annual report provides insight into the performance and results of the Port of Rotterdam authority in 2017. You can download the annual report by clicking on the image above.

The port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest sea port. The port owes its leading position to its outstanding accessibility for sea-going vessels. And to its intermodal connections and the 180,000 people working in and for Rotterdam’s port and industrial area. A place where unlimited ambitions can become reality!

On Wednesday, April 18th, Venturn was present at the inspiring Harbour Congress Rotterdam 2018. An afternoon programme aimed at promoting the city and port. Top speakers shared their visions on digitization, sustainability, revenue models and smart logistics.

Venturn helps many maritime companies develop their strategies for improvement. Those who dare to innovate in the port area look at both digital and non-technological developments, such as new ways of managing and working. Especially the latter development is decisive for business performance. ‘Only’ a quarter of the company’s performance is improved by technological innovations, compared with 75 percent by social innovation. This is also evident from earlier studies of Dutch soil: technological innovation is mainly about new knowledge creation. Social innovation is about recognizing, acquiring, integrating and applying this knowledge for generally commercial purposes. Innovation demands other skills from port employees.
Self-management and independent work are particularly important for the respondents, as is collaboration and persuasion and negotiation: all the features that robots can not yet match. Thinking skills, resource management skills and digital skills are, according to the respondents, more important, but to a lesser extent than the abovementioned personal skills.1

One important driving force of innovation is a steady influx of talented, educated young professionals. While experience and proven expertise are still very important in the harbor, technological developments ask for young people that know their way around the digital universe. By attracting young talent, you can introduce fresh-minded creativity to your team and set the pace for business strategies that are in line with a rapidly evolving world.

That’s why we need to show young technicians their skills are valued through excellent career prospects and opportunities for self-development. The Venturn Young Professional (VYP) Programme, for example, offers recent graduates an intensive 18-month training curriculum. We offer Young Professionals a challenging training curriculum that includes sessions on process and project management, leadership, and personal effectiveness. Our Young Professionals can put these new skills and knowledge into practice immediately as they work on projects that suit their passions for top players in the industry.

As a Young Professional you get placed with different companies on a project basis, gaining experience with leading organisations in the maritime industry. We work with shipping Lines, Port Authorities, Terminals, Rescue Organisations, and Offshore and Logistics Service Providers amongst others.

Have we interested you in participating in our Venturn Young Professionals Programme or do you know the perfect candidate? We are hosting another Young Professionals Recruitment Day on Friday May 4th 2018. More information is available here, or contact to learn about the possibilities.
